Everyone wants to know what to eat and what not to eat in order to facilitate weight loss. Fitness Magazine recently published an article on “diet” foods that can actually make you gain weight. This information can also be used when discussing children’s weight loss.
Many yogurts actually contain excessive amounts of sugar. Even plain yogurt naturally has sugar (but this is natural milk sugar and does not need to be avoided). Watch out for flavored yogurts, they will most likely be loaded with sugar. It is best to choose yogurts that are low in sugar, but also low-fat, just as if you were choosing a milk to drink.
Sugar-free Cookies and Candy
Manufacturers often add fat when they take out sugar, so it is possible that your sugar-free products actually contain high amounts of fat. In most cases, it would be better to eat a small portion of a food that has real sugar in it and less fat than it would be to eat sugar-free foods that are high in fat.
Veggie Chips
Veggie chips may sound healthier than potato chips, but don’t be fooled. They generally have excessive amounts of salt, calories, and 9 or 10 grams of fat. While they may have slightly more vitamin A and C than potato chips, they can still cause you to gain weight if not eaten in moderation.
Granola
Granola has been seen as health food. However, one cup of granola has 560 calories and 28 grams of fat even before you add milk or yogurt to it. Granola is still fine to eat but it should only be eaten in small portions.
Sushi
Sushi may seem like a healthy restaurant item or take-out choice but the ingredients can be high in fat and calories. Many rolls are stuffed with cream cheese, mayonnaise, and cheese. Tempura is also battered and fried, so not really healthy. One shrimp tempura roll (6 pieces of sushi) has about 500 calories and 20 grams of fat.
People tend to feel that they are making a healthy choice when they choose to have a smoothie. However, some smoothies that you can get (at Jamba Juice or Smoothie King let’s say) are high in calories. Some smoothies can even be 500 calories. The healthiest smoothies will have low-fat milk or yogurt and fresh fruit.
