The Grand Prize Winner of Camp Shane’s Nikki Blonsky Scholarship Has Been Announced

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

(PR Web) Kobe Howard a 13-year-old from Oklahoma has won a nine-week stay (with room and board included) to Camp Shane, the longest-running weight-loss camp for children and teens in the country, for the 2011 summer session.

Camp Shane Nikki Blonsky

Camp Shane partnered with Nikki Blonsky to choose one lucky winner for a nine week scholarship at Camp Shane weight loss camp.

Blonsky, the star of the funny and provocative ABC Family TV show, Huge, which followed the lives of teens and staff at a weight-loss camp, visited Camp Shane last summer to announce the scholarship in her name. Blonsky urged the campers to get rid of their negative self-image and make use of their time at Camp Shane to learn about healthy eating, nutrition, exercise, and most-importantly, self acceptance–urging them to not judge their insides by other people’s outsides. “I am proud of myself for being me, an individual,” Blonsky said. “You should be proud of yourselves too.” Her show, Huge, Blonsky said, “was just like the program here at Camp Shane, not only about losing weight, it’s about finding out who you are are as person.”

Kobe’s winning essay submission (written with a little help from his mom, Brandy Howard) was selected from hundreds submitted and detailed why he wanted (and needed) to win the scholarship. Once an athletic kid, Kobe’s physical activity came to an abrupt halt when he suffered a debilitating knee injury. The enforced inactivity caused Kobe’s weight to balloon to 230 pounds, far too much for his 5-foot 4-inch frame. Recent surgery corrected the torn ligament in his knee, allowing him to once again begin exercising. He and his mom learned of Camp Shane online, but thought Kobe’s attendance would have to remain a dream.

“I am a student and the single-mother of three kids,” says Brandy. “I couldn’t afford the fee for him to attend the camp.”

That’s when Brandy learned of the Blonsky scholarship and helped Kobe write his essay. The resulting entry touched Nikki Blonsky’s heart.

“To be able to help change one kid’s life for the better, by giving them a summer at Camp Shane, is very exciting,” says Blonsky. “I wish I had all the money in the world so I could help all the kids who entered, but I am very proud to know I will be helping Kobe. I hope he has a great summer at this place I just adore—Camp Shane.”

“Nikki has inspired our campers with her confidence, energy and absolute belief that anyone can change their lives with hard work and the right encouragement,” says Ziporah Janowski, Co-founder of Camp Shane. “We were delighted to partner with her on this scholarship and look forward to welcoming Kobe here, to help him lose weight, get healthy and start on the path towards a brighter future.”

When told of the win by phone, Kobe tearfully repeated, “I can’t believe it, I just can’t believe it…”
His mother was a bit more eloquent, “I can’t even tell you how much we appreciate this and how grateful we are to Nikki Blonsky and Camp Shane. Because of them, my son is going to get his life back.”

Camp Shane Weight Loss Camp Aerobics ClassMTV came to Camp Shane during the summer of 2010 to film Emma, as she was coached by plus size model and American Idol finalist, Joanne Borgella. There were some tearful moments, such as when Emma saw her near 300 pound weight, not having weighed herself in years. Though after leaving camp she continued to struggle with her self-esteem, the foundation she established at Camp and the support of her coach and trainer kicked in. The Twinkie Diet and How NOT to Lose Weight

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Earlier this month, we heard all about a brave professor’s Twinkie diet experiment.   For 10 weeks straight, Mark Haub ate one Hostess or Little Debbie snack every 3 hours as a substitute for meals.  When he wasn’t eating those, he “snacked” on Doritos, Oreos, and sugary cereals.  Why would anyone subject themselves to this?

Haub was trying to prove a point: in weight loss, pure calorie counting is what matters most, not the nutritional value of food.  This seems to go against everything we’ve ever learned, yet Haub lost an astonishing 27 pounds over the course of this experiment.  He consumed less than 1,800 calories each day (when he should have been consuming 2,600 on average) and burned significantly more calories than he ate.  Therefore, the formula worked.  He lost weight.

This is definitely NOT the recommended diet for any normal person and weight loss can be accomplished in much healthier ways.  In fact, Haub advises others not to duplicate his extreme form of weight loss.

In a much healthier story of weight loss, Tony Posnanski lost 200 pounds by consuming less calories BUT eating more nutritionally.  This story, from CNN covers the straightforward, yet extremely successful technique for efficient weight loss.

Posnanski went from consuming 10,000 calories a day to 2,400.  He got rid of the processed foods and stuck to fruits, vegetables and lean meats.  “It is pretty boring,” he said, “but the results aren’t boring.”

Keri Gans, a registered dietitian, acknowledges that this simple formula for weight loss may not be the most exciting, but it works.  “Consumers need to understand that health and the ideal body weight are not found from a gimmick,” she said.  “It takes hard work.  The end result is long-lasting success.”

It’s also important that the weight loss be as natural as possible.  The human body may be able to lose a lot of weight in a short period of time, but it’s not always healthy and it usually doesn’t lead to long-term success.  Posnanski himself tried alternative methods, finding that diet pills made his heart race and weight loss shakes left him hungry.

Experts say that the key to weight loss is making it a lifelong change.  It can’t be temporary and there are no shortcuts.  To make this a permanent change, it is imperative to form and keep good habits.

The key to weight loss success is moderation, a core belief at Camp Shane weight loss camp for children and Shane Diet Resorts weight loss program for adults.  By serving portion controlled meals in combination with physical exercise, campers and guests naturally lose weight.

In the grand scheme of everything, despite the latest diet trends, pills, shakes, fads, etc., weight loss is still best achieved through the simplest formula of all: healthy diet and exercise.

Exercise Helps Teens Overcome Obesity Gene

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Having the so-called fat mass-and-obesity (FTO) gene does not necessarily mean that teens will become obese. In a recent study of 752 teens, 37 percent did not have FTO mutations, 47 percent had one copy and 16 percent had two copies. According to a study published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, the effects of the gene can be avoided with an adequate amount of physical activity. One great option for any child or teenager is a summer weight loss camp, such as Camp Shane, which always encourages a healthy lifestyle through proper fitness and nutrition techniques.

The FTO Gene

Each copy of a mutation in the FTO gene is correlated with an increase in weight of about 3.3 pounds. Having copies of the mutation is linked to having a higher body mass index (BMI), a higher percentage of body fat, and a larger waist. However, this can be almost completely combated by adding one hour of physical activity to each day. In other words, if a teenager gets the recommended amount of exercise per day, they can offset their genetic predisposition to obesity. Besides being able to lower their BMI through an hour of exercise daily, obese teens (with the obesity gene) can also decrease body fat mass and waist circumference.

Physical Activity Recommendations

It is recommended that all teens get at least 60 minutes of exercise (moderate and vigorous) a day, such as playing sports. Most of us do not get our genes tested, therefore, the above recommendations for physical activity should be followed by all teenagers. We cannot choose our genetic make-up but we can choose how we modify our lifestyle to either maximize or minimize our genes. If a teenager has a gene that predisposes them to obesity, they may be able to cancel it out by eating healthfully, exercising regularly, and adopting other healthy lifestyle behaviors, all of which we encourage at Camp Shane.
