Sometimes
habits become too ingrained to modify
without a big change, and a summer
camp that specializes in weight
loss can make a huge difference
in the lives of overweight kids.
Often, overweight
kids get caught up in a vicious
cycle: as their social lives become
more marginalized, eating in isolation
becomes the norm, and the weight
keeps adding up. Not participating
in social activities and self-consciousness
about appearance lead to less physical
activity, and the weight adds up
even more.
There can be tremendous
tension in the house around the
issues of food and eating. Parents
get frustrated – trying to
change their children’s unhealthy
eating behavior can easily evolve
into overzealous monitoring and
nagging. And parents of overweight
children are often struggling with
their own unhealthy eating habits.
When an overweight
child has normal weight siblings,
it can be even more difficult. Parents
don’t want the other siblings
to be deprived of food they enjoy,
or to add resentment by siblings
to the already long list of emotional
and social problems the overweight
child may be having. So there are
always treats in the house to tempt
the overweight child.
And all this is often
happening in the hormonally-challenged,
emotionally charged teens and early
20s, when children are at their
most sensitive to being accepted
by their peers.
What can a weight
loss camp do?
At a good quality weight loss camp,
children will never have the feeling
of being “left out.”
Teasing and bullying will not be
tolerated.
Camp will be structured
so that everyone has to participate.
Since this is a population used
to opting out of activities, their
choice should be between activities,
not whether they participate or
not.
Childen will be exposed
to many sports and taught athletic
skills in a non-competitive environment.
Kids can find some activity that
may not be available at home to
excel in and feel good about.
There should be plenty
of non-sport activities such as
theater, sings and arts & crafts,
which help develop social skills
and self-expression.
Food should be healthy,
balanced for growing, active bodies
and portion-controlled, since many
children have skewed notions of
what a portion should be.
Since there is a tremendous
amount of misinformation about food,
a good weight loss camp will also
teach nutrition fundamentals, as
well as a beginning level of cooking.
There is a tremendous feeling of
empowerment in being able to take
care of yourself – even if
it means coming home from school
and making yourself a smoothie.
In addition, a camp
will help children boost their self-esteem.
This will happen naturally in the
course of learning skills and making
friends, but it’s also helpful
to share experiences in a group
setting, with a trained guidance
counselor. No one should feel alone
or isolated.
OTHER BENEFITS
OF GOING TO A CAMP
- Camp equips kids
for success by helping them feel
loved and influential
- Camp is about
relationships and learning to
get along. Without TV, homework
or other distractions there is
more time for talking, listening
and growing.
- The adults at
camp can serve as positive role
models. They are different than
teachers and can perhaps be the
first adult “friends”
they make.
- Many of the campers
are new; there are no pre formed
groups. It is a brand new opportunity
to make friends. A child can start
fresh; he doesn’t have any
sort of a reputation that could
influence how others feel about
him.
- Camp is
a community to which we all belong.
Instead of being lost in the crowd,
a child is part of this group
and can feel good about belonging.
