DO THEY FOCUS ON MY CHILD? Or is
it one of a "chain of camps?" Running 2 or 3 camps
means the director is too busy dividing time between multiple
camps (on site or on the phone) to be there for you and
your child!
At Shane, we have been running one and only one camp
on the same site for 37 years. We'll be there to give
you and your child unparalleled personal attention.
DO THEY OWN THE PROPERTY? Or are they on short-term
rented property not owned. There is no financial
investment or commitment and landlords don't invest in
rented property like an owner will. If enrollment is poor,
its easy to close down even before the summer
starts. The "traditional" camp offered by a "chain
of camps" has operated for only a few years and they
have closed down several camps before. They also run the
risk of not having their lease renewed.
Camp Shane has been owned and run by the Ettenberg
family since 1968. Over $1.5 million in improvements have
been made in the last 4 years alone.
DO THEY REALLY RUN A CAMP? Many rent part of
a school campus, so campers share the facilities with
non-dieting students and strangers. The campus is open
to the public and security is a real concern. Vending
machines on campus can also be a problem. Converting
classrooms-only weeks before the program opens-provides
limited activities.
Camp Shane is a real camp, in a closely
supervised setting. We have some 50 buildings and activity
areas, each built by us for a specific use, that you won't
find on a school campus.
DO MINIMUM STAYS MATTER? If you can go for 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,
or 9 weeks, it means kids are constantly coming and going.
It's unsettling and disruptive. It's impossible to develop
strong friendships, learn skills or build self esteem.
We only have two days where new campers arrive. Camp
Shane has painstakingly devised programs of true substance
that develop skills and build solid friendships
and they are dependent on camper continuity.
IS THE CAMP DIRECTOR THE OWNER? Families have
traditionally chosen camps by selecting a reputable, highly
skilled Owner/Director. Now, big business would like to
enter the overweight camping market.
Their interest is financial gain. You'll never speak
to the owner, because the corporation is controlled by
executives sitting in the home office with no camping
experience. It's a far cry from the warm, personal Camp
Shane experience.
WHAT'S THE LAKE PROGRAM OFFER? All the other camps
have very small lakes - literally measured in yards and
not suitable for much activities
Our property on nearby Swinging Bridge Lake is 9
miles long. Our awesome program runs three water-ski boats
and four mini speed boats. We employ nine full time lake
staff.
DO THEY HAVE A GOOD TRACK RECORD?
Camp Shane has an outstanding, consistent and unmatched
track record. Our success is built on our reputation
and we are completely sold out every year.
