Resources for Parents: Why Parents Love Camp Shane
We achieve our goals: Specific Programs and Rewards
COMMITMENT TO CARE: Before they even arrive, we ask campers to sign a pledge called the Camp Shane Commitment to Care. When a child signs, he or she promises to do the best possible to be supportive of others throughout the stay at camp. Do they occasionally slip up and forget what they pledged? Of course. After all, they're children! But we're always there to remind them what they promised and that this is what makes Camp Shane so unique.
T.E.A.M. PROGRAM: We have a unique program in place, with specific activities and rewards that stresses that we're all part of the T.E.A.M. - "Together Everyone Achieves More". Every summer we see campers - children who often do not exist in such supportive environments back at school - come to Camp Shane and experience a whole new style of getting along with each other. This leads to feeling and being included, and that creates new levels of self-esteem and then -- the achievement follows!
We nurture your child: Guidance Program

How our campers feel about themselves is as important as how they look. Looking great is one part; feeling great takes a whole different type of encouragement. Guidance counselors on our staff conduct a unique and effective program designed at Shane. It helps campers understand their own feelings; identify their positive attributes; feel good about and develop pride in themselves.

We engage campers in carefully directed bunk discussions, rap sessions and one-on-one conversations. At the same time that we're encouraging all that physical activity and all those new-and-improved eating habits, we do all we can to keep our campers talking. We learn more about them, and they learn more about what is inside of themselves.

We not only want to hear from them, we want to hear from you. Communication is our key to success, and we want to know everything that is on the minds of our campers' parents.

We prepare your child: Staff Training
STAFF: First, we hire great people. Then we run a training program teaching specific, effective tools to positively direct children in their relationships with others. We lead most of the training sessions ourselves, and add professional trainers and child psychologists to help sort out the complicated issues.

METHODOLOGY: We stress the importance of using positive reinforcement; the skill of really listening to a child; building a camper's sense of self-worth; and how to deal effectively with negative behavior by reacting positively. Our camp staff understands how to do it by example, because our directors are consistently positive role models - day by day, hour by hour, minute by minute.

PLANNING: All our programs are meticulously planned, organized, equipped and executed. An enormous amount of planning and experience results in superb programs. Every aspect of our program draws upon decades of experience, utilization of written procedures and adult supervision.

As a result, there is no standing around, waiting for something to get organized. Our specialists know what they are doing, and that results in lots of valuable instruction, leading to lots of self-confidence.

Our reputation is renown: How others see us
MEDIA REVIEWS: Every single visit by the media has resulted in rave reviews! We've been doing this since 1968 and we are very proud of what we have accomplished. We've been featured on ABC TV's 20/20, The Discovery Channel, the Learning Channel, 60 Minutes Australia, the Sally Jesse Raphael Show, the BBC and much more! We've been written about in the Miami Herald, Boston Herald, the Detroit Free Press, the Cleveland Press among many others. We've even been quoted in Time Magazine!

REFERENCES: More important, though, are the thousands of letters and references from former campers, like the parents who wrote: "We sent you a little girl and you returned a young lady. Her weight loss was just fantastic and it has completely changed her whole outlook on life." Or the parent who wrote "My Howard looks fantastic and he is looking forward to school shopping for the first time in three years?"

Can you imagine writing a letter like these at the end of next summer?
