FAQ’s

Where is Camp Shane Located?

We are conveniently located in the high desert between Phoenix and Flagstaff, surrounded by 26,000 acres of ranchland. Our proximity to attractions such as the Grand Canyon enables us to offer our campers exciting trip opportunities and our climate of warm days and cooler evenings allows for a varied and fun program. Take route 17 North from Phoenix about 70 minutes, exit #268, go west for 3 miles and follow signs for Orme School.

Where do your kids come from?

We have campers from all over the US and from overseas. We welcome and encourage diversity.

Who are your counselors?

We personally interview and reference all staff members. Typically, our staff members are educators, fitness enthusiasts, nutrition majors or those who are just very passionate about weight loss! We look for staffers who have the same “Commitment to Care” that is our basic camp philosophy.

Where do campers live?

Our campers live in beautiful, dorm-like housing. There is a bathroom with showers, sinks and toilets, shared by every two rooms and each room can accommodate 5 campers and 1 staff member.

What is your Horseback Riding program like, and can beginners participate?

We encourage all campers to take part in our riding program. It is appropriate for all levels of rider, from beginner to expert, and it is taught be certified instructors. Campers may ride for just a few hours a week, or take part in our extensive program, in which they learn all aspects of riding, including how to care for and saddle the horses.

How do you deal with Homesickness?

It may surprise you, but we have little homesickness at Shane. We provide a warm, nurturing atmosphere, where everyone knows everybody’s name, and there is a tight knit community of campers and staff. Children flourish in our “home away from home”, where the environment is always encouraging and positive.

Why Shane Arizona as opposed to other weight loss camps?

Camp Shane Arizona is the only traditional weight loss camp with proven results. We are also the original and longest running weight loss camp in the world! We are committed to the success of your child.

What medical facilities and staff are in camp?

We have a modern, well equipped health center that is fully staffed by 3 nurses. For part of the summer there is a doctor in residence, and there are local doctors available on call.

What is the food like?

You won’t find any “diet” food here. Our food is just awesome, with lots of variety. We teach making healthy choices and portion control…it’s not a “diet”, it’s a way of life, and it works.

What about long term success?

Shane AZ is not a quick fix. Your child will return home with new skills to help keep off the weight, and most importantly, maintain a healthy life style. Campers learn the importance of regular exercise and good nutrition so they can modify their own behavior. We communicate regularly with them throughout the year via email, snail mail, and telephone, and are always available for support.
