The Future Health of our Children
For 46 years I have been the owner of Camp Shane Weight Loss camps for kids and teens. Close to 20,000 children have been through our programs and tens of thousands more have communicated with us. Not many folks have more experience than I have in understanding what is going on in the lives of families when it comes to overweight children and adolescents.
There is recent good news that 3-5 year old’s are showing improvement in their weight. We can only hope that this trend will continue. What about everyone over the age of five?
The sheer amount of false information about weight loss that is presented through the media is enormous and disheartening. Bold face lies are routinely put forth to the public on television and radio, in weight loss books, magazine articles, and by celebrities and weight loss products.
We now face an extreme medical crisis and it’s getting worse. We know being an overweight child can result in high cholesterol, heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, damaged kidneys, liver impairment, early puberty, Type 2 diabetes, depression and low self esteem. New research at the Mayo Clinic indicates that obesity might result in premature aging. Children are being diagnosed with diseases that used to be found only in adults and they are being placed on medications meant for adults. We don’t know what the long term consequences will be.
Can we change these scary facts? Yes, when parents have accurate knowledge of how to lead a healthy lifestyle they can help their children escape the consequences of childhood obesity. Your children cannot do it without you.
